Today's lesson focused on opinion articles. Atticus reviewed an article based on an opinion about the internet causing students to lose critical thinking skills. Atticus participated in class discussions, and he was on task.
I gave Atticus tinfoil to create a rock for his clay sculpture. Once he established the correct size (he placed his clay character on top) of the rock, we covered it with clay to finalize the look of the stone.
This morning, Atticus worked online while driving to Massachusetts. We reviewed the vocabulary terms associated with our coordinate plane lesson. Then, we graphed and labeled points on a coordinate plane and wrote the ordered pair for given points. Atticus was able to take the lesson's online quiz, answering the 5 questions correctly and earning 100%.
We discussed the implication of the nine rules of conduct that Jonas receives upon being appointed the Receiver of Memories. For example, Jonas is now allowed to lie raising the question of whether other members of society have likewise been given this option, including Jonas' father. Atticus discussed that Jonas' entire life could be based on a lie if such were the case. Jonas also is no longer allowed to have palliative pain relief. We noted how this change in Jonas' life will enable him to learn to endure the pain of the memories he will be receiving. I noted how all of society's past history and memories are stored with a single person to shield the rest of society from emotional pain, and that Jonas and the Giver will be the repositories of the entire society's pain. We read the text noting how this heavy burden resulted in prior receiver's "disappearance."
