In today's class, we would have continued our discussion on anatomy and physiology, including talking about the four basic tissues, which include epithelial, connective, muscular and nervous tissue. We would have talked about what makes up each kind of tissue, what its purpose is, and where it can be found in the body. Cameron was absent today on a field trip. We will continue our discussion tomorrow.

9-5 Completing the Square – We reviewed that Completing the square is a method that is used for converting a quadratic expression of the form ax2 + bx + c to the vertex form a(x - h)2 + k. The most common application of completing the square is in solving a quadratic equation. This can be done by rearranging the expression obtained after completing the square: a(x + m)2 + n, such that the left side is a perfect square trinomial. Completing the square method is useful in:
• Converting a quadratic expression into vertex form.
• Analyzing at which point the quadratic expression has minimum/maximum value.
• Graphing a quadratic function.
• Solving a quadratic equation.
• Deriving the quadratic formula.

The Berlin Wall was a symbol of the Cold War and nearly 50 years of long struggle between the capitalist West and communist East. It was a literal manifestation of the Iron Curtain, which was claimed by Winston Churchill because it separated the two regions of Europe. It was built by the Soviet Union in 1961 to prevent the emigration of high-skilled East Berliners to capitalist West Berlin where they could have better lives. The city was divided into the capitalist section (United Kingdom, United States, and France) and communist section (Soviet Union) because the western Allies did not want the traditional seat of German power fully in the hands of the Soviets. When Berlin was divided into four Allied zones, the Soviets were unhappy with the capitalist governments in the middle of their communist zone and instituted a blockade to drive the Allies out. They responded with the Berlin Airlift of 1948 and the blockade was eventually withdrawn.
The wall is a harsh reminder of the people who attempted to escape and the wall itself represents the tensions between the Soviets and Capitalist West that existed during the Cold War. Escape attempts from East Berlin after the wall was built were risky as Soviet soldiers were instructed to shoot on sight anyone coming near the wall. The wall crumbled in 1989 as communist influence in Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union ruptured and the economy stagnated.

9-6 the Quadratic Formula and the Discriminant – We learned that the discriminant of a polynomial is a quantity that depends on the coefficients and determines various properties of the roots. It is generally defined as a polynomial function of the coefficients of the original polynomial.
Assignment: Find the discriminants of the assigned problems and determine the number of solutions for each quadratic equation for homework.

Today he learned the expression: Me duele. He completed one activity using vocabulary about body parts and also the expression it hurts. We saw a video about health in Latin America. He learned the term La Salud, and created sentences on how to stay healthy. For grammar, we worked on making singular and plural sentences.

Today we learned the definition of a nutritious and healthy lifestyle from the Latin culture, and he reviewed body parts in Spanish.

Turn in Text Analysis Essay; begin introduction to Unit 6: Establishing Truths. Today, we started the first part of the unit: poetry - diagramming poetry and poetic devices (terminology). Cameron got started creating flash cards with definitions for each poetic device & an example of each.
