We are starting a unit on Imperialism. Today we looked at how a celebrity talk show host and comedian, Trevor Noah (who is from South Africa) has been impacted by the legacy of imperialism. We looked at some excerpts from his autobiography, "Born a Crime," and watched a brief interview with him. Trevor Noah explained his unlikely path from apartheid South Africa to The Daily Show began with a criminal act: his birth. Trevor was born to a white Swiss father and a black Xhosa mother at a time when such a union was punishable with prison time. As a child, Trevor was kept mostly indoors for the earliest years of his life, bound by the extreme measures his mother took to hide him from a government that could, at any moment, steal him away. Finally liberated by the end of South Africa’s tyrannical rule, Trevor and his mother were finally able to live openly as mother and son living freely to embrace the opportunities won by a centuries-long struggle.

Cameron liked answering the interview questions and opened up about his personality and strong points. He did refer to himself as "cocky" and I said it's okay to be confident but being cocky is not something to boast about. I tried to explain that if he wants to be in the lime light, he should set a good example as a role model and have a polite and positive attitude.
