Topic 4 Systems of Linear Equations and Inequalities
Lesson Outline
4-2 Solving Systems of Equations by Substitution – We learned that substitution is one method for solving systems of equations. The process involves solving one equation for a variable and substituting the solution into the system’s other equation. This results in an equation in one variable. When you have one of the variables you can solve for the other variable by substituting it into one of the original equations in the system.

King Henry VIII
Lesson Outline
In the 1530s, King Henry VIII began to challenge the Church's power within England and to restrict the power of the Pope in Rome. Henry wanted a male heir to promote the continuation of his dynasty and wanted a divorce from his first wife, Catherine of Aragon. The Pope would not grant King Henry VIII a divorce, so unable to get what he wanted, Henry began the process of changing religious authority in England. He passed the Act of Supremacy in 1534, officially severing ties between the Church of England and the Pope, requiring the English population to recognize the King as the Supreme Head of the Church. This separation laid the foundation for the modern Church of England. We talked about the history behind the terms "Protestant" and "Protestantism" in Christianity. We discussed examples of Protestant sects of Christianity and some of the different names used for church leaders such as priests, pastors, ministers, reverends, etc. As for Henry VIII, his desire for a male heir led to a lot of violence and chaos in England. Ironically, his second daughter becomes Queen Elizabeth I - one of England's greatest monarchs. She actually changes the course of English and world history as we will see in future class sessions.

The War of Roses
Lesson Outline
The War of the Roses was fought between the English Houses of York and Lancaster. It was a bloody conflict that spanned decades. The people of England held very tightly to the belief in the divine right of kings. The War of the Roses eventually brought the Tudor dynasty to power. History doesn't really record a winner for these drama-filled wars. Instead, they are remembered as a bloody feud that wreaked havoc on the lands and people of England. Although they ushered in the powerful Tudor dynasty, this came at a very, very high price. An interesting factoid...the blockbuster novels and HBO series, "Game of Thrones" were loosely based on the War of the Roses.
