What Happened After the Fall of Rome?
Lesson Outline
Feudalism arose out of the decline of the Western Roman Empire across Europe, when the rise of invasions by barbarian tribes led landowners to seek protection from soldiers. Under the feudal system, kings granted land called fiefs to nobles who pledged their loyalty in exchange. The system was supported by the agricultural labor of serfs who worked the land for the landowners. The feudal system provided a social and political order to Western Europe after the fall of Rome. In the 8th century CE, French King Charlemagne unified a large portion of Western Europe under the Holy Roman Empire. Through violence, Charlemagne established stability and built a Christian empire. After his death, however, his descendants could not maintain the same level of control, and the empire was divided once more into smaller feudal kingdoms due to political upheaval.

Topic 3 Linear Functions
Lesson Outline
3-1 Relations and Functions – We learned that a relation is an association between sets of ordered pairs where the domain consists of the set of x-values and the range consists of the set of y-values. Then we learned to identify functions and their components in a variety of forms such as graphs, tables, and ordered pairs. Next we learned that a relation is a function only if each element of the domain is assigned to exactly one element in the range. Finally we identified constraints on the domain based on real-world problems.

The Fall of Rome
Lesson Outline
The Roman Empire lasted from 27 BC until 476 AD, when it was finally conquered by a Germanic warlord named Odoacer. However, the Roman Empire had started a long period of decline long before the 5th century AD. By the time Rome fell in 476 AD it had been declining for a number of reasons. One of these was internal corruption. Another was successive invasions by Germanic tribes, including the Vandals and the Ostrogoths. Other major factors in its decline were the division of the Roman Empire by the emperor Diocletian and the moving of the capital to Constantinople by the emperor Constantine.
