Carson is working on drafting an explanatory or informative essay. I first provided organizational ideas such as organizing ideas by level of importance, and then provided transition phrases and words to incorporate in this organizational style. As Carson drafted the introduction, we discussed how to combine sentences , how to reorganize sentences within his paragraph ,and how to add information informing the reader why the topic of the essay- proper preparation for a tennis tournament- is important. Carson is always very quick to recognize how to improve his sentences and word choice. We then worked on incorporating details into the body of the paragraph as details and explanation are the crux of this type of essay.
Carson completed the lab "Pointing Directions" which experimented with creating an electromagnet and causing 4 compasses to spin their needles. He diagrammed his before and after circuit set-up. He answered the follow-up questions. He watched a video about electromagnetism and the universe.
Today we got practice with mixed property exponents. We reviewed the multiplying, dividing, power to power, and negative exponent properties first. Then we did an activity where we had to match the simplified answer to the letter. We practiced the mixed properties together and eventually answered the question, "How does a snowman get around?" "He rides an icicle." This was good practice for Carson.
Today, we discussed current college campus protests and related those to similar protests during the Vietnam War. We also looked at the political challenges some leaders face today.
Today he completed the online assignment Las emociones, on Clan 7. He is learning all the emotions in Spanish and the verb To Like (gustar), he did well today.
Carson completed the Simple Circuits quiz. We went over the correct answers and troubleshot the questions he got wrong. I asked follow-up questions. He completed Lesson 4 Launch "Charged Magnets." He completed Encounter the Phenomenon "Jumping Magnets" where he watched a video of electromagnetism. He answered the questions and developed a list of his own questions about electromagnetism.
