Comprehension and Synthesis
Lesson Outline
We first reviewed the homework assignment given to Liam last Thursday. After activating prior knowledge about the last chapter we read, Liam continued to read on in chapter 7 in "Sadako and the Thousand Cranes." We collaboratively answered several comprehension questions and Liam was asked to reflect on certain expressions to try to ascertain their meaning and the intent of the author's use of literary devices. Liam is encouraged to put himself in the shoes of the character we're discussing and it appears to help him better understand alternative perspectives. Liam and I answered 2 questions after reading chapter 7 together, and he is to answer the two last questions for homework.
Assignment

Character traits
Lesson Outline
Liam and I collaboratively read Chapter 6 in his book, 'Sadako and the Thousand Cranes.' We circled and defined words with which he was unfamiliar (e.g., throbbing. flustered), and I offered examples of how they might be used in examples/sentences to which he might better connect and relate. Liam was queried on the ways Sadako and the newly introduced character in chapter 6 (Kenji) are alike and different. We made a Venn diagram to highlight the commonalities and differences. Liam contributed examples which pertained to the exercise. Several key concepts were repeated and explained in different ways to facilitate recall and help Liam more effectively synthesize and integrate the information acquired in today's lesson.
Assignment
HW was assigned last week and Kiam placed it in his bookbag. I gave him another assignment this week on narrative non-fiction and its purpose: 1) why might the author have written the book about Sadako, 2) how does the saying, "Practice makes perfect" apply to Sadako's crane-making abilities?

Lesson Comments
Elise mentioned that Liam's mom keeps asking his teachers for HW - however, I gave him HW last week (he remembers me doing so) but he appears to have misplaced it. I gave him another assignment this week (and made a copy in the event it is misplaced again).
