Liam opened Adobe Illustrator and I helped him upload the template for the isometric illustration. I worked with Liam to create the walls and floor of his project.
Scientific Method Friction and Fluid Vocabulary Words
Lesson Outline
Liam completed looking up and writing down all his vocabulary words and their definitions. He read the article from his online site about Friction and Fluids, and completed an experiment proving that a smaller piece of paper with a sharp point will fall faster than a flat piece of paper having the same weight.
We read the last chapter in the book this afternoon and Liam asked me to read on - wishing to learn more information in the epilogue. We discussed the events that transpired in chapter 9 as Sadako passes away at the end of the chapter. I explained the analogy of the cranes she saw rustling in the breeze in the window and how they could represent freedom - just as Sadako is now free from her pain. While it is often challenging for Liam to abstract concepts, using examples from his personal experience is hoped to facilitate heightened scope of awareness and encourage him to consider alternative viewpoints and perspectives. Liam was asked questions about the chapter as well as broader questions about the book. He ascribed an A+ grade to it and said he liked everything about it when asked what he liked and/or disliked. Liam was also asked to find comparisons between him and Sadako and find similarities and differences; we used family as a point of reference to help him make these connections. Liam read about Coerr, the author, and the circumstances that led to her writing the book. I wrote down some of his answers and reflections on an activity sheet which went home with him. Liam shared that his parents are planning a trip to Japan in March and said that he wants to show them where Sadako lived. He is looking forward to making origami cranes when he returns on Thursday.
Liam read a story aloud. He then answered questions about the story and identified supporting details. He engaged in a making inferences activity where he used existing knowledge, context clues, and critical thinking skills to make educated guesses about what was implied but not directly stated.
Liam completed his Multiplication and Division Math Drills. He reviewed how to find the Mean. He completed an activity adding, subtracting, and multiplying fractions.
Scientific Method Force Motion Friction Amoeba Reading Comprehension
Lesson Outline
Liam used his race car in an experiment to demonstrate his knowledge and understanding of Friction, and how it slows down Motion. He used the diagram he drew of an Amoeba to explain how an Amoeba digests its food and reproduces.
During today's lesson, we studied words that indicate time in a story. Liam identified phrases in past, present, and future. He also identified adjectives in a paragraph and the wrote his own descriptive paragraph.
Liam worked on a reading activity and Venn diagram sheet for Chapter 6 to activate prior knowledge. He asked several intuitive questions as we read about Sadako handling her illness with hope and courage. After guided reading, he was encouraged to reflect on content to monitor comprehension, via summarizing and synthesizing, making textual, personal, and world connections, and creating and analyzing sensory images. Liam used a 'Before, During, and After' chart to reflect on what he knows, wants to know, and what he learned from reading chapters 7-9. He was tasked with making inferences with text evidence to explain how Sadako's mother handles her illness. We reviewed several vocabulary words with which he was unfamiliar in the chapters, and Liam was prompted to explain his implied understanding from text evidence and background knowledge. We have a final chapter to read next week and can then begin making our origami cranes. Liam is looking forward to this activity.
Assignment
No HW was given today as Liam did not bring in his previous assignment.
