Lesson Comments
Liam complained of a stomach ache that went away after we began playing chess. I think he was just nervous and during the chess game, we practiced some basic karate techniques and asked me why I was black. He totally opened up. I explained that your skin tone depends on your ancestry. But everyone bleeds the same.

I determined from today's session that Liam is at a second grade reading level. He is able to read well but doesn't comprehend the text. He is unable to understand character motivation, identify the plot, make inferences or draw conclusions. Reading the text is a chore and I had to offer to read alternating paragraphs with him to complete the Literature Workshop assignments. Worked on second grade and third grade material.
