We continued our analysis of the descriptive line of reasoning or organization by parsing last night's reading by a Native American on greed and its relationship to the land. As JP encountered difficulty with the introduction's extended metaphor/personification , I first assisted him in following the writer's technique of personifying "greed." We then noted the use of visual imagery within the personification. As writers can use more than one technique to organize an essay ,I further pointed out the essay's use of comparison working in concert with the descriptive line of reasoning. Last, we examined the conclusion and discussed the technique employed- posing a solution to the problem posed in the essay . Further , we examined the effectiveness of the writer's rhetorical choices given the intended audience.
Discuss answers to the FRQ test given on Tues. Discuss possibilities for other answers.
Outline the characteristics which make up the tropical rainforest, fauna, flora, temperature, rainfall, soil nutrition, human intervention.
Today's lesson addressed description as a line of reasoning or method of organization. I first reviewed the various lines of reasoning and discussed how figurative language plays a prominent role in the descriptive method. I then placed the various forms of figurative language on the board which we defined. Based on last night's reading of a descriptive essay, JP located and identified the writer's use of imagery and anthropomorphism. In order to evaluate if the descriptive method is effective we next identified the writer's thesis and discussed why this line of reasoning and the use of figurative language are effective to support the thesis. Last, in order to evaluate the effectiveness of the essay ,JP identified the intended audience and discussed why the narrative/descriptive method is appropriate for a general audience. In this regard, we noticed the lack of expert opinions or technical language.
JP did a good job creating possible business ventures for his hypothetical pitch to investors. We discussed the importance of quality research and communication tools.
