Libby looked at the wonderful dots she created yesterday and decided she wanted to do more abstract expressionist drawing and painting outside the circle’s borders. She created two wonderful artworks using the concentric circle as her muse. Then she experimented with chalk and oil pastels and watercolor paints. She moved to the floor painting area where she was able to splatter paint. She wants to continue working in this style during Lower School Studio. Libby is trying new materials and processes! Brava, Libby!

Grammar Spelling ABC Order Sentences Reading comprehension
Lesson Outline
Libby read, discussed, and put her spelling words into ABC order. She reviewed her old high frequency words and practiced reading her 4 new high frequency words. She used these new words and completed a reading comprehension activity putting these words in the correct sentences. Then she used these words to write a sentence of her own.
I began with a one-minute phonological awareness exercise (Kilpatrick, D2#6), followed by visual, auditory, and blending exercises. Libby read CVC words with more confidence today. For regular spelling review, I dictated the following: CVC words. For Irregular spelling, I dictated the following: the, is, his. Libby practiced writing her first and last name. To conclude, Libby practiced reading fluency, reading "On a Log" by FlyLeaf Publishing.
Today, September 15, is International Dot Day! We read The Dot by Peter H. Reynolds and created a composition full of wonderfully designed dots. I showed Libby an example of dots I had created with different designs, colors, and circle stencils. I had different sizes of circle stencils for Libby to trace, and she drew, colored, and painted designs within the circles/dots. She discovered splatter painting and really made some lovely color combinations of purple and teal green. Then we cut the circles out and arranged them into several pleasing compositions. Libby was joyful and successful in her creating!
Libby did great with today's lesson on adding in any order. We used colored pencils to model the addends of problems represented by connecting cubes. Then, we wrote new equations with the order of the addends changed and colored cubes to match the new equations. Libby finished with the lesson check problem and spiral review questions.
