We used Newsela, and covered 3 different articles today. He completed 3 quizzes, getting 3 out of 4 correct on 1, and then getting 100% on the remaining 2!
We read the following articles:

N.J. program bets on hackathon to aid students, turn struggling city around
Black youths soar into the clouds with unique learn-to-fly program
Jackie asked me to substitute for Courtney. We talked about inventions. This led to his asking me to show him Reading Performance System. He did a few of the exercises and we talked about the importance of reading to success. We then worked on the outline for his book.
Gwendolyn continued to add to her Florida history timeline. We explored prehistoric Native American history as well as the colonial era. She wrote paragraphs about each.
Gwendolyn studied European explorers today. She studied six different explorers from Spain and those men who explored the whole of North America. Her vocabulary today included the words expedition, conquistadors, and colonization. She also researched St Augustine and such places as Castillo de San Marcos and the Fountain of Youth.
Gwendolyn and I planned and began the construction of a new multi-session project: creating a wall length Time Line of Florida History. We researched a timeline of Florida history through reliable Palm Beach County historical sites, and we proceeded through the information, determining which specific events met our pre-determined, written criteria for inclusion. She decided on and created a beginning paper for the timeline, and we researched both Ponce de Leon's 1513 arrival and the shipwreck of Jonathan Dickinson. She utilized pictures of the State Seal of Florida and the Florida flag to decorate the beginning paper of the time line.
Courtney was stuck in traffic, so I subbed for her class. Stephen went on his etstudies weekly account and read a couple articles, then he played sumdog the rest of the time in writing, math and english.
Gwendolyn participated in a birthday celebration for her brother for part of our session. We then researched and took notes about the Tequesta Native Americans to add to her new project on Florida Native American tribes.
