Bobby explored topics and people related to the Spanish American War today. Through reading, videos, and examining primary documents, he learned about the following: the USS Maine, Cuba, colonization by Spain, Diana Nyad (current events), Colonel Theodore Roosevelt, the Rough Riders, San Juan Hill, John Hay, William McKinley, and William Rufus Shafter. We talked about the concept of colonization and how people in countries around the world came to speak the languages they do (i.e. Brazil--Portugese).
Today, Bobby participated in a Vietnam War Memorial Field Trip. It was an outstanding opportunity to discuss military history, and learn about a very important era in our American history. I ensured that the conversations with him were age appropriate. During the trip we: walked along the wall and learned about how the replica differs from the one in Washington, D.C., the significance of the wall and the names on the wall, why people leave flowers, t-shirts, and teddy bears on the wall, the dates of the war, how soldiers lived in jungles (age appropriate conversation), looked at military vehicles on site (helicopter, jeeps), and we talked to a two star general who served in four different wars. Overall, the lessons learned cannot be entirely covered in such a short session summary.
