Today Gwendolyn and I began working on her regions of the United States unit. Today we looked at the North East region of the United States. Gwendolyn chose to research the state of New Jersey. She researched all about the state and then created a brochure. Gwendolyn did a fantastic job on her brochure. We finished class by reviewing all the states and their location on the map.
Today Gwendolyn took her chapter 4 test. This test covered nation symbols, elections, branches of government and community heroes. Gwendolyn answered 33 of the 37 questions correctly, earning an 89%. Great job Gwendolyn.
I requested permission to work on mathematics during this session, typically set aside for Social Studies. Bobby has a topic assessment tomorrow, and we had review to do prior to his test.
During this session Bobby worked diligently on factoring, long division, prime and composite numbers, and multi-step word problems.
Today Stephen used his government book he made to take anopen note government quiz. We then discussed how the Legislative branch of government makes the laws. Lawmakers weigh the positives and negatives of a new law. Stephen then had to create a new law and find the pro's and con's of this new law. Stephen made a law that states that children must arrive to school on time. He made a his pro and con list and determined that arriving at school on time would be a good law.
Today Stephen and I were able to complete lesson 6 & 7 in his government unit. Lesson 6 focused on signs of citizen pride. We discussed the meaning of the Pledge of Allegiance and the National Anthem. We also discussed patriotic symbols and national holidays. Lesson 7 focused on what makes a good citizen. We discussed Paul Revere, Susan B. Anthony, Clara Barton and Helen Keller and their positive character traits.

The USA explored: Ethan look at and overview of the USA, its oceans, mountains, laws, and culture. We watched a video on Abraham Lincoln and his speech at Gettysburg. Great job Ethan
Today's lesson focused on symbols of national pride. We discussed the changes to the American flag over the years. We discussed the Pledge of Allegiance, National Anthem and Liberty Bell. We then watched a short Brainpop video on the Liberty Bell. Gwendolyn answered all 5 hard quiz questions correctly. Great work today Gwendolyn!
