Bobby and I discussed the topics he worked on with the substitute from Thursday. We reviewed the history up until the Civil War in Florida. He then created a K-W-L chart and we activated his prior knowledge regarding the Civil War (he worked on this with Kevin last year). Through the KWL activity, I was able to identify what his areas of interest were with regards to the war (weaponry, battles, Abraham Lincoln). We talked about the advances in medicine and weaponry that emerged from the Civil War and we talked about the underlying causes of succession. Bobby read several short articles, and looked at primary sources as we explored the war.
Today Gwendolyn and I began class by reviewing her vocabulary for to her quiz today. Today Gwendolyn answered 11 out of 13 questions correctly on her quiz. Today's lesson focused on "Models of American Citizenship". We read about Thomas Jefferson, Harriet Tubman, Helen Keller and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Gwendolyn and I then watched a short Brainpop video on Helen Keller.
How inventions changed our world: Ethan expressed interest how things came about. We viewed the telephone, light bulb, drilling tools, spears, light, steam engines, and other items that have changed our way of living.
Chess: During the thirty minute period we played chess. Marina enjoyed playing and hopefully learned strategies given to her. She beat me the first game and I beat her today to keep her interest in the game. Great going Marina!
Today Stephen and I focused on the 3 branches of the local government. Stephen researched Tequesta. He found the mayor, city council members and the palm beach court house. Stephen added this information into his government book. We then took turns reading the next two sections in his textbook. These sections focused on the state and local government. Stephen has worked very hard on his government! Great work Stephen!
Today Stephen and I continued working on our branches of government book. Stephen began by looking up pictures of the President, Congress and the Supreme Court. Stephen the added pictures to his book. Then he looked up who the Governor of the state of Florida is and found out who made up the legislative and judicial branch for the state of Florida. Stephen added these pictures and information to his book. We will research the 3 branches of the local government tomorrow.
Gwendolyn completed chapter review questions from her textbook to study for her upcoming test. Then, she read and completed comprehension questions about the American Flag and the United States Seal. Finally, she researched online some of Florida's state symbols in order to design her own Florida quarter.
