Today we continued our unit on Economics with the study of Entrepreneurs. I used the biography of John D. Rockefeller as a starting point as he is one of the earliest entrepreneurs in US History.
Ethan watched two short videos from Brainpop.com. The first video pertained the the stock market. The second video was about President Barack Obama. We completed post-video quizzes after viewing the videos. The Brainpop videos and supplemental materials related to the topic area are tailored to his grade level. Ethan seems to retain more when a visual element (short video)is involved.

I used two short videos from Brainpop.com during our session today. One video related to the stock market. The second video was about President Obama. We completed a post-reading quiz following each viewing. Brainpop's content is truly geared more to Ethan's grade level and the visual elements work well with him because I feel he is a visual learner. We explored other online resources and topics of interest too.

Craig and I discussed news about President Trump and looked to CNN and CNN Politics "Impeachment 101". We continued the student tutorial from CPalms "Trial by Jury". This proved very informative and interesting, quizzing Craig on new terms - deliberate, preside, unanimous, justice, verdict - and involving him by simulating the experience of a juror from beginning to end. He understood the procedure of a civil case, the "jobs" of both plaintiff and defendant's attorney, the Judge and jurors. He heard the facts of the case, the cross examination, and made a decision. He did a good job on the quizzes as well. A good experience overall!
This morning we began with our calendar review activities. We also practiced yesterday, today, and tomorrow as we are working to build Danny’s knowledge of the calendar (beyond just listing the days in sequential order). Next, we worked on a Florida Studies Weekly packet of jobs that people do. We read about firefighters, mechanics, chefs, police officers, and more. We also discussed their clothes and tools. We read an emergent reader called, Who is the Hero? This booklet described the firefighter and Danny helped read words that he knew. We then completed a picture sort in which Danny matched the community helper with their tools. Our vocabulary focus today was on the word “labor”, which also means to work. Danny scored 5/5 on the follow-up assessment for this work packet. Additionally, we worked on a packet entitled, "Me on the Map". We followed directions as to how to mark the pictures and write our planet, continent, country, and state. The packet will be sent home for an optional summer task for Danny to work on learning (memorizing) his home address as well as an emergency phone number.
