In this last lesson on Economics, Gracyn and I played monopoly online. She is quite the business-minded girl and I have no doubts about her success in business! I am grateful we were able to end the lesson with a prayer for her new endeavor at Jupiter Christian. She was a joy to be with.
This afternoon we completed our calendar review and a calendar activity. In the activity, we looked at a sample month of June calendar and answered questions using the information. This included items such as: how many Mondays are there, what are the dates for the first and third Friday, the date of the last Tuesday, etc. We then completed a Florida Studies Weekly packet about being a good citizen. We read that good citizens are helpful, kind, fair, follow rules, and share. We discussed scenarios involving taking turns, voting to make a group decision, and ways to share to make things fair.
We finished watching the episode of America, The Story of Us that covered the Great Depression. We began watching the episode that discussed the mobilization in preparation of our nation's eventual involvement in WWII. We looked at some notes related to the Watergate break-in and the subsequent cover-up. We made some connections related to events leading up to the 2016 Presidential election campaign, as well as, the ongoing investigations now. We started to watch "All the President's Men". I want Bobby to realize that; no one person is above the law, the vital role of a free Press that is protected under the First Amendment, and the the separation of powers/checks and balances that prevailed in order to deliver justice.
In this lesson, Arianna learned about John D. Rockefeller - the earliest entrepreneur in the history of the US, also the richest man in the history of the world. It was a great wrap up to our lessons on economics - goods & services, supply & demand, saving and spending. It brought all the concepts of money and how we make it and use it together.

I presented potential areas of study for Stephen for today and next week. I mentioned watching "All the President's Men" related to Watergate and drawing parallels to what happened in the run up to the Presidential election and the "speculation" of collusion and a possible cover-up involving the White House. I also mentioned a continuation of the topics from Brainpop. Last, I have a DVD series, "America, The Story of Us. Stephen was most intrigued by some of the episodes in the DVD series. He chose an episode and we read a summary that highlights what is covered. We also read discussion questions that we will go over together post-viewing. I stressed that I want Stephen to actively watch and listen for information that apply to each question that will allow him to develop/embellish in his responses.
This morning we began with a review of the calendar and days of the week sequencing activities. We focused on geography in our session today. We began with a Brain Pop Jr. video about reading maps. We saw various maps such as a globe and paper maps. We can use a map to see continents, countries, cities, streets, transportation, landforms, and more. We also learned that there is a map key and symbols to represent things on the map. He scored 4/5 on a modified easy quiz. We worked on pages 28-35 in his Geography textbook. First, we looked at countries. This tasked us with finding and labeling our country, our leader, and the language we speak primarily. We compared sizes of countries, continents, and states, deciding which is bigger. We discussed our state, a state next to ours (he picked Georgia), and a state far away from ours (he chose Iowa). We also played our cardinal directions song. Finally, Danny chose a Brain Pop Jr. video about rural, suburban, and urban areas. We learned that urban areas are big cities with tall buildings, things are close together and there are a lot of people, cultures, and foods. Suburban areas are more spread out and many people travel to the city to work. Finally, rural areas have open spaces and many farm crops and livestock. Danny scored 4/5 on a modified easy quiz. Our vocabulary focus in this task was: population.

Ben and I looked at a real tree cookie today that I brought from home. It was a slice of cypress. Ben counted the rings to determine the age of the tree and we looked at defects in the tree that might be evidence of drought, disease, etc. We began the Social Science section of the Stanford Achievement Test. Ben finished and we also finished the Listening section of the test.
