Teddy designed and assembled a Mini Teddy figure out of cardstock today in art class, He drew his face, designed his hair and clothing, and assembled it together. He took great care to design his shirt, pants, and sneakers in the colors red, orange, and blue. He also skillfully created his hair in yellow felt. Then Teddy wanted to create something in air-dry clay. He made a clay hat with eyes and eyebrows for one of Cam's lizards. Very creative!
Calendar Spelling Grammar Reading Comprehension Short A Words
Lesson Outline
Teddy completed his calendar work. He practiced spelling his spelling words. He finished writing sentences for his last 4 spelling words. He reviewed what a sentence was and completed several activities demonstrating his understanding of what makes a sentence. He worked on several activities using short (a) words. He reread and discussed his two stories for this week, "Jack Can" and "Nat and Sam." He read a story about a fat cat, and answered in writing comprehension questions about the story.
This morning, Teddy began with adding 1 basic facts practice. Then, we worked on our lesson on how to use pictures to show adding to a group. Teddy listened to problems and drew quick pictures to find the total number of objects. Then, he counted groups of objects, circled the larger group, and used counting on to find the total amounts. We finished with a quick game of addition Bingo.
Teddy reviewed his spelling words and wrote a sentence for the 1st 4 words. He practiced the short vowel sounds for a,e,i,o,and u. He learned what a sentence is, and wrote the definition into his rule book. He completed several activities pertaining to recognizing a sentence. He read "Sam Can" again and looked for key details in the story. He read a little booklet about a cat named Jack and identified several key details in the story and wrote them down. He read a new story about a boy named Nat who took his teddy bear to school. He discussed the main idea and story details.
Teddy was prompted to draw a picture of what he sees in the night sky. Teddy drew a picture that included the moon, a few houses, and stars. He was able to identify all of them as I wrote the words. We observed a sunset, and Teddy was able to identify that the sun was going down and setting. Next, we read about what an astronomer does. Then, we reviewed the word wall words: Earth, Moon, star, Sun, pattern, predict, and season. Lastly, we read a book about the Moon.
Teddy had a great first day. He was excited to be back at school and ready to start learning. This morning, we began chapter 1, which will cover how to model adding within 10, show adding to a group, model putting together, and show adding in any order. Today, Teddy completed the 'Show What You Know' and vocabulary builder on addition concepts. Then, he practiced writing the numbers 1 through 20 properly with a tracing activity.
