Lesson Topic
"Advice to Youth" and "in Defense of Prejudice"
Lesson Outline
1)Discuss Mark Twain's "Advice to Youth:" What stage of his career is Twain in when he delivers this speech? Is this before or after he is known as a satirist? Are there any, "serious" pieces of advice here? What is the purpose of this humorous speech? What is Mark Twain's real advice? 2)Discuss "In Defense of Prejudice:" Raunch advances a controversial argument: that we should allow prejudice to be expressed rather than seek to repress or eradicate it. How, in the first paragraph does he establish himself as a reasonable, even likeable person whose views should be heard? Where else in the essay does he create this persona? Why is this ethos important in an ethical argument?
