First Amendment
Lesson Outline
Olivia presented a well thought out analysis of the 2019 US Supreme Court case examining whether , pursuant to the "free exercise "clause of the First Amendment, a bakery could refuse to bake a wedding cake for a gay couple . We examined the two competing legal principles -anti-discrimination laws and the "free exercise clause" ,and discussed whether the Court's decision to remand the case for further proceedings favoring the bakery would have been different if the religious beliefs of the bakery had been founded upon a less established religion such as Satanism, or witchcraft idolatry rather than Christianity . We then began our review for next week's final exam. I discussed the influence of Enlightenment philosophers on the Declaration of Independence , separation of powers, and checks and balances.
