Math – Kelcy practiced solving two-step word problems. He practiced circling the important numbers and then rereading the problem to be sure he understands which operation is required. Next he learned to draw a model to check his work.
Science – Kelcy learned the best place to find fossils is in sedimentary rock. Then he learned that this type of rock is formed over millions of years by pressure from the top layers forcing out all the air and water. The three types of sedimentary rock that he studied are sandstone, limestone, and shale. Next he learned that the reason sedimentary rocks contain so many fossils is that the plants and animals become trapped in layers of sediment and as these new layers of sediment are added they protect and preserve the covered remains. He was able to determine that you wouldn’t find fossils in metamorphic rock because they would be destroyed by the extreme heat and pressure.
