Lesson Topic
The Pythagoreans And the Golden Ratio
Lesson Outline
We explored the mystical symbol of the Pythagorean Societies - the pentagram, or five-pointed star. This symbol was unsettling for the Pythagoreans for it afforded them a glimpse of infinity--a notion that they had rejected. When the 5 points of the star are connected, they form a regular pentagon. When the angles of the pentagon are connected, they form another star, ad infinitum. But the dimensions contained therein give rise to the golden ratio.

Lesson Comments
Jess stayed with me through a session that was pretty abstract but kind of fun. We did have the sidebar including the joke about the billy goat and the calculus follow-up in which we found that the goat was going 65mph when he jumped into the deep hole!
