Lesson Outline
This morning, I read a passage to Lucas and asked him to pay careful attention to details as I was going to ask him questions based on the story. I selected a story about a bald eagle, as I knew this is one of Lucas's favorite animals, and I hoped it would engage, excite and educate him all at the same time. Lucas paid careful attention and answered both multiple choice and open-ended questions with accuracy, demonstrating excellent comprehension skills and the ability to synthesize and integrate information presented auditorily. If parts of a text don't make sense to Lucas, he uses strategies such as re-reading (or asking for it to be reread), predicting, and questioning in order to better understand it. We then read another story. I asked Lucas to read along by placing his finger underneath each word as I read the passage slowly. He followed all directives well and sustained attention throughout. He then chose words from a word bank that best fit in the blanks based on the text. Lucas did very well on this task as well. He makes good effort to decode words but becomes frustrated at times if he feels he is not meeting the (high) expectations he sets for himself. He is always encouraged for his effort and, to his credit, if he's re-directed, he will often come back to the task to meet the challenge and continue to work towards a more positive and successful outcome. Although we experienced a few technical difficulties during the session and attempts to trouble shoot them were unsuccessful, it is hoped that these will be satisfactorily resolved by the time of our next session.
