Lesson Topic
Othello Act 3 Scene 3: The Temptation
Lesson Outline
1) Watch a clip of the 1996 version of Othello, where Iago finally tempts Othello into believing that Desdemona and Cassio are having a secret affair. What is the difference between the way that the film portrays this scene, and the way that it occurs in the text? Why does the film present this temptation through multiple focal points?
2)Discuss Jessica's Quotation Journal: Why are your quotes significant to the overall development of the play? What does Emilia reveal about herself through her actions?
3)Act 3 Scene 3 Discussion Questions: Define Irony. What are three ironic happenings of the scene? How does Desdemona foreshadow her death? How does Iago manipulate Othello into believing his lies? What is significant about Cassio's secret meeting with Desdemona? How does this defy the period's decorum? What "evidence" does Iago present against Desdemona? How, in modern society, would this evidence be received? Why doesn't Othello simply call in Cassio and Desdemona to vouch for themselves? What, in the end, does Othello resolve to do to Desdemona? How does Iago feel about this?
