Lesson Topic
Discuss Tess of the D'Urbervilles pages 60-84
Lesson Outline
1)Describe the progression of Tess as a maid to "fallen maiden." How, after having been taken advantage of by Alec, is Tess perceived in society. What, therefore, does Hardy say about Victorian social customs and beliefs?
2) Discuss the relationship between Tess and Alec: did Alec ever intend marrying Tess upon her arrival to Treshfield? How do we know? What does this mean about his intentions as a man of distinction and privilege? Does he feel, to some extent, that Tess has no reason to refuse him? Does this justify his actions afterwards?
3)How does Hardy's social/gender critique still hold true today? Provide several examples from the real world to support your ideas.
