Close Reading of "The White Mulberry Tree"
Lesson Outline
1)Oral Quiz: What is the fate of Emil and Marie?
2) Close Reading of "The White Mulberry Tree": What happens to Frank that causes him to blank-out, and grab his gun to shoot our two protagonists? What do you make of the fact that Frank's first instinct is to blame Marie for "making him see such ghastly things?" What is the significance of this death occurring underneath a white, Mulberry tree? What dominant impression does the color white connote? How is the scene described in contradistinction? Do you think that Frank is justified in his response to adultery? How would his actions be interpreted today, and in the 1800s? How does gender factor here? Why is it that Frank does not mind the death of a man, but the death of a beautiful woman is a tragic, deplorable fate?
