Voice
Lesson Outline
We did some light stretching before our warm-ups: sustained hissing to cultivate breath-support and "throwing" our voice like a basketball (sighing high to low) and then "picking up" our voice (sliding from low to high). Several arpeggios ascending and descending to warm-up the range and get the breath supporting the tone. We're continuing to focus on singing in head voice and removing the pressure from behind the sound (singing vs. "shouting"). We also learned how to mark our music with breath-marks and slur marks so we know when to breathe and when to carry-through. Musical phrasing, a musical sentence, is much like a spoken sentence, we discussed. It's important to make those breaths count so we can sing all the way to the end of that musical phrase! We talked about the importance of listening and following directions so that we can make the most out of our lessons together.

Lesson Comments
We're having the same issues with voice as we are in piano regarding listening and following directions. We did talk about why it's important to listen and follow directions and be respectful of other people's property and the school's property. He continues to sing when the song has ended and while I am talking (??) and loves to do the exact opposite of what I ask (isn't that fun?). I do realize we're in our first few lessons together and that he might need a little more time getting to know me etc. We're building up our rapport and I know that doesn't happen overnight! We will see what our Friday lesson brings.
