Read Aloud (The Monster at the End of This Book) and getting to know each other.
Conducted some brief pre-assessments from the Basic Reading Inventory:
Letter ID - stopped, Nicholas seemed frustrated (0 letters known)
Wordless Story - Nicholas described, in detail what was happening in the illustrations of a short story. Strengths - verbal skills, story comprehension, inferring what could happen next.

Introduced the letters N,L,S,I (uppercase only), played games, made word associations, and teacher/student created cards to practice at home.

Math Pre-assessments: Counting, counting with one-to-one correspondence - Nicholas was strong in both areas.

I am realizing that Nicholas will need instruction in Mindset for Learning (with perseverance being the area of focus!). I am hoping to develop an "I can try" attitude with him, as right now he tells himself academic tasks are just too hard.
