Main topic and central message
Lesson Outline
Dillon began today's session with a school assignment about main topic. He asked to read the passage silently, and then he answered the written questions. He struggled with this assignment when he did it independently, so we reread it orally and talked through the questions. We also reviewed strategies for answering multiple choice questions. We continued the session with work on determining the central message of a passage. He read two fables, "The Scorpion and the Frog" and "The Grasshopper and the Ant". He was able to determine the four characteristics of a fable along with the central message of each of these stories. He did a great job on this assignment. He seems to do much better when he is asked to read the passages out loud, however that is incompatible with how students are tested at school. Dillon needs to begin to work as carefully during silent reading as he does during oral reading. He may be reading passages quickly and not self- monitoring for comprehension when he is reading silently. We will review self-monitoring and questioning strategies at his next session.
