Today's lesson focused on recognizing that some problems can be solved in 1-step and others can be solved in 2-steps by first solving a sub-problem or hidden problem. Jason worked in the online textbook solving the lesson's examples while paying close attention to the question's wording. Then, he completed the lesson's practice and problem-solving questions and quick assessment problem. Jason finished with 30 basic addition fluency facts.
Interactive Calendar Daily Fall Sentence Puzzle Vocabulary Compass Christopher Columbus
Lesson Outline
Jason completed his interactive Calendar. He has a good understanding of his daily calendar talk activity. He read and discussed his old and new vocabulary words. He explored and discussed the importance of Columbus and his voyage to the New World. He used his toy compass to explain how Columbus navigated the Atlantic Ocean, along with using the stars and his telescope.
Jason made a boat out of aluminum foil. He tested its ability to float. Then he made a prediction as to how many paper clips the boat would hold before it sank. He made another boat to see if he could improve upon his design.
Jason and I read the texts "Win or Lose" and "Let the Games Begin!" on pages 24-25 in the Research Companion. I asked him what the Olympics are, and how people at the Olympics show respect for each other. We modeled shaking hands and discussed how shaking hands is a form of respect. We reviewed the Golden Rule.
Jason and I reviewed the new colors and verbs that he has learned.
At the start of class, he demonstrated increased familiarity with the colors pink, purple, grey, brown, and orange. He still needed a little help with identifying brown and purple when I said them in Spanish but recognized the other colors. Our next target for this set of vocabulary will be for the student to be able to generate the Spanish words when the teacher provides the English.
We spoke about the verbs: to listen, to see, to play, to speak/talk, to listen.
Jason has different levels of comfort with each of these words. He is able to use speak/talk with ease when using his phrase speak about Minecraft. However, he is still building familiarity with the remainder of the verbs.
