Colson and I diagrammed and read about how the angle of the Sun's rays striking the Earth's surface determine how hot or cold that area of the Earth is. He learned that the Sun's rays striking the equator at a 90 degree angle are hottest, and the Sun's rays striking the poles at low angles are coldest.
We returned to our Sherlock Holmes short stories by Arthur C. Doyle, specifically the" Bascombe Valley Mystery." After reviewing the clues and the plot which we had previously studied we watched a PBS dramatization of the story. We further reviewed Colson's final exam on the novel," Call of the Wild. "

Colson worked diligently today on this last assessment for our Financial Literacy class. It has been a great experience working with him in this course.
I began with words that end in -able, -ible, and -le, such as admirable, accessible, and article. Colson read example words (Megawords 4, List 25, p. 81) and syllabicated as necessary. He read a timed oral reading fluency passage with example words in just over one minute with no errors (Megawords 4, p. 96). He answered the written reading comprehension questions. Colson is prone to copying the answer directly from the text; I encouraged him to put the answer in his own words. I reviewed all Latin and Greek word roots, and we played two rounds of Crazy Moose to review example words.
To conclude, I previewed the short story "The Monkey's Paw" by W.W. Jacobs. We co-read the first page, summarized the setting, and made predictions. We will read the rest of the story in the next session.
Review of Final Exam: The questions on the final exam were reviewed by the student. The remaining time during this period was utilized to assist the student in preparing for the Financial Literacy Quiz this afternoon.

Self Portrait in the Style of 5 Different Cartoons
Lesson Outline
Colson was tired today but still productive. He is working on a Super Mario-style self-portrait and decided to trace the entire image as his approach for this assignment, which I allowed. He’s using confident lineweights and I did a quick drawover to help him adjust the facial features to better resemble himself.
Colson reported having a good weekend and said his mom appreciated the Mother’s Day card he made. He focused well today and completed his South Park-style self-portrait. With time left for just one more cartoon portrait this semester, he selected the Super Mario style. I broke down the shapes and proportions of Mario and gave him a quick demo before he began. I allowed him to leave two minutes early at the end of class.
Topic 8 Solve Problems Involving Surface Area and Volume
Lesson Outline
Topic 8-4 Find Volume of Spheres – We learned that the volumes of the sphere and cone are proportionally related. The volume of a sphere is twice the volume of a cone that has the same circular base and height. The formula for the volume of a sphere is V = (4/3) pi r3 where r is the radius of the sphere.
