The Call of the Wild
Lesson Outline
As Colson encountered some comprehension difficulties with the reading, we carefully reviewed the plot sequence from last night's assignment. I explained how Buck's love for Thornton empowers him to win an impossible bet. Colson then in writing answered a comprehension question on our discussion. Next, I addressed how the next chapter of the novel departs from reality and delves into fantasy or legend. I explained the archetypal fantasy of "El Dorado" or a search for the city of gold in the context of the next chapter wherein Buck and Thornton travel deep into the Yukon wilderness in search of a legendary gold mine. I then distributed Poe's poem "El Dorado" which I read aloud and discussed. We explored the metaphorical search described in the poem and how the poem's protagonist engages in a futile search but meets a "pilgrim shadow" who exhorts him to never relent in his search. Colson noted the rhyme scheme and rhythm of the poem.

We began reading "the Most Dangerous Game but got caught up in a discussion about 9-11, because Colson gave an excellent speech about the event during lunch today. He asked me to share more of my memories about the day since I was living close by and had many personal recollections to share. Colson was also excited because he had just received his learner's permit at the DMV and we discussed driving experiences, speed limits, hazards of driving, and other vehicular issues.

Topic 8-3 Find Volume of Cones – We related the volume of cylinders to the volume of cones. We recognize that the relationship between the volumes of prisms and pyramids with the same base and height is the same between the volumes of cylinders and cones with the same base in height. This relationship is generalized to write the volume formula for a cone.

We are studying the novel's thematic shift. At first, London highlights his view of human society as Darwinian where the weak and poor are in effect uncared for and left to die. In today's. lesson we continued to study how Buck's new owner, Thornton, introduces the concept of love as an antidote to Darwinian socialism, or a belief that the weak deserve their lot. We discussed the supernatural feats Buck performs as an impassioned revitalized being . I explained how this shift in emphasis relates to London's view that compassion and love can temper cruelty and greed. Colson worked on writing sentences to comprehension questions addressing Buck's supernatural feats .
