Today we continued to study Buck's organic transformation virtually into a new species, an evolved Uber-being. I provided instruction on London's perspective that Mankind could likewise evolve to a higher plane where violence and exploitation are no longer rules of survival. We noted specific textual language demonstrating Buck's "super evolution ." On the board I placed a thematic pattern chart which Colson copied into his notes. We further reviewed Colson's homework -fill in the blank comprehension questions based on yesterday's lesson. Last, we analyzed how each of Buck's prey is higher on the food chain, culminating in this chapter with Buck killing a moose.

Colson was attentive to today's session on Real Estate investments, Bonds, and CD's. Unfortunately, Colson failed to submit a completed Business Plan Project today even after granting him a 3-day extension.last week.
I discussed the need for him to pay closer attention to the specific requirements provided on the Project information sheet and to increase his effort to produce acceptable/complete work.
I began with a timed oral reading fluency passage (Megawords 4, List 22, p. 50). Colson read the passage in one minute, ten seconds with only one error. I reviewed the spelling and definition of Latin roots port, tract, rupt, dict, ject; we played two rounds of Crazy Moose (a phonics card game based on Uno) to reinforce the concepts. To conclude, we started the short story "The Most Dangerous Game" by Richard Connell.
We continue to develop Colson's reading comprehension skills using our novel.Call of the Wild. Today, I prepared a very short comprehension exercise based on the homework reading which we completed during our first segment. Colson had some difficulty but ,with some assistance , evidenced a good degree of understanding. We also revisited a motif of the final chapters -the conflict between the wild and domesticity -and read through the next pages of the novel noting textual evidence of this conflict. We further discussed how Buck's killing a bear marks his climb up the primordial food chain as during the early portions of the novel he attempted to kill a small rabbit and later does slay Spitz, the lead dog. As he becomes more wolf-like ,the size of his prey likewise grows.

Lesson Comments
Colson was well focused and very attentive to our beginning review session for his upcoming Civics Final Exam to be given on Thurs 5/15 and Fri. 5/16.
Colson used the first 10 minutes of art class to complete the back side of his math work. He proudly shared that he got his driver’s license yesterday! I gave him the option to either work on our ongoing project or make a card for Mother's Day- he opted to make the card, including an inside joke about driving to the DMV. He ended class freehand sketching in Procreate.
I gave Colson some time at the start of class to eat his lunch and then he dove into his math work. He demonstrated a good understanding but occasionally confused front and side views- which is totally reasonable because it can be arbitrary. He tends to do calculations mentally which made it hard to track his process on some of the problems. We completed the front side together.
