Unit 3 Earth’s Changing Landscape
Lesson Outline
Lesson 3 Design Solutions to Slow Landscape Changes – We learned that civil engineers use design software as part of their engineering design process. It helps them visualize the design solution and whether or not it can be used. This is how they build, test, and improve designs before using them. Then we looked into new ways to slow landscape changes by preventing wind erosion.

Sun Catcher and The Science of Light and Sunsets
Lesson Outline
Jackson finished his sun catcher and attached the four sun fun facts to it. We hung it up on outside door of the lunchroom where the sun can shine through it, and our school community can read about the sun and learn! Then we watched the video “Why Is The Sunset Red?” by Astronomic. We are learning about the science of light and sunsets as part of our STEAM learning. We reviewed our ROY G. BIV and looked at his notes from our color theory work. Then Jackson wanted to paint a sunset. He is watching a step-by-step video on how to paint a sunset using watercolor. Jackson is painting on heavy watercolor paper, and he is learning the principles of that medium versus acrylic paint on canvas.

Unit 3 Earth’s Changing Landscape
Lesson Outline
Lesson 3 Design Solutions to Slow Landscape Changes – We learned that the breakwater is an offshore structure such as a wall protecting a Harbor or beach from the force of waves. We also learned that planting shrubs along a coast and using rocks to block waves can slow landscape changes. We learned about levies to control flooding too. We discovered that planting crops in curves that follow the shape of the hills will help in growing more crops and preventing erosion.
