I was out on Friday and gave Andrew a review to do with the substitute. Andrew had some difficulty recalling the formulas needed to do the problems. So we spent the day looking back through the previous content and rewriting the formulas we need. We worked out problems that had us computing the interior and exterior angles of regular polygons. Then we worked out problems with various quadrilateral types. We discussed the relationships with the diagonals, whether they were congruent or bisected. We will finish the review tomorrow.
I was out Friday and gave Aiden a 5.1 and 5.2 review to do with the substitute. He was able to complete only the 5.1 review so we went through it together. He did excellent on it. My only comment was for the notation he used to divide by 4 (still an emerging skill). We continued the 5.2 Review. I’m impressed and happy that Aiden is doing a great job setting up these word problem equations. This tends to be difficult for students and Aiden is picking it up easily. Aiden had difficulty with a problem asking him to choose which equations were equivalent to the one given. We discussed test taking strategies for him. We discussed answer choices and working backward to check to see if the options “made sense” for the answer we got. We also reviewed our commutative and associative properties to move around and group terms in different orders to see if it would generate an equivalent equation.
Today Aiden and I took notes on Two step equations and word problems. Aiden read the problems aloud and then we came up with ways to express what the problem represented. Aiden had to come up with how to write " 5 less than 3 times a number" and "half of the quantity of 4 more than m". Aiden did a great job recalling how operations are represented symbolically. Next, we practiced solving two step equations by doing inverse operations. We also worked backwards to check our solutions.
