Bobby and I took advantage of the social studies period to get caught up in his science homework. Bobby was unable to do his homework earlier in the week and given the nature of the subject matter, the influenza virus, we used this class time to complete all assignments before moving forward.
This afternoon, Bobby and I took a detour from our regularly scheduled topic and focused on a journey through the Dark Web via YouTube. We explored several important concepts such as the constitutional right to free speech, and whether or not US citizens are entitled to anonymity on the WWW. We discussed anarchy and how it may threaten personal freedoms.
Bobby re-edited his character analysis of Tom. He fixed comma splices, capitalized characters names, and eliminated repeated words to make his message more clear.
We learned that matter is made of atoms which are very small and the Atomic Theory is a scientific explanation of the structure of atoms and how they interact with other atoms. We learned that atoms have a dense nucleus made of protons which have a positive charge and neutrons which have no charge. Outside the nucleus there are negatively charged electrons speeding around in an area named the electron cloud. We learned that there are many kinds of matter and an element is the type of matter made of just one kind of atom. Then we learned that all known elements are organized by their properties in the Periodic Table of Elements. Next we learned that different atoms of the same element can contain different numbers of neutrons and electrons can be gained or lost but the number of protons in an element always stays the same. This is why elements in the Periodic Table of Elements are given an atomic number equal to the number of protons.
Assignment: We made compounds from atoms of elements
This morning Bobby and I concluded our review of chapter 5. We continued to work on solving expressions featuring variable and mixed fractions. I continue to impress upon Bobby to focus on the process and not the final product; to identify what is being asked in a given problem before he attempts to solve a problem. Once having done so, he can use some of the tools we have learned so far this year. There will be chapter five test on Friday of this week.
This morning Bobby and I reviewed some important details regarding viral reproduction, vaccines and antibody production. We also compared the physical features of a bacterium with that of a virus. We discussed how a vaccine works by imprinting a chemical code onto the immune system of the host. When a foreign pathogen invokes, the body reads the chemical signature and reacts accordingly. Homework is to complete #'s 1-18.
Bobby edited sentences with errors with commas; specifically he added commas and quotation marks in dialogue. We read two chapters in "Rot and Ruin." We focused on foreshadowing to predict what would happen next. Bobby should review spelling words for Thursday's quiz.
