This morning we spent a few minutes determining our material requirements for our Anubis death mask and finalized the basic design. We will begin construction next week.
This afternoon we continued our exploration into the development or evolution of early Egyptian society. We previewed some of the accomplishments of Ramses the Great before researching some of the gods worshipped by the Egyptians. We researched several basic designs for the construction of our Anubis death mask. We have developed a web page that will be documenting our progress on this project.
This afternoon we completed the worksheet highlighting the introduction of the Asian snakehead into the freshwater ecosystems in the Northeastern United States. Bobby worked on the remaining "advanced research" questions which reinforced such concepts such as predation, predator/prey relationships, the impact of invasive species on an ecosystem as well as others. Homework: complete any remaining questions. We spent the remainder of class cleaning and stocking the praying mantis nursery.
During our morning session we completed the practice questions on page 217. We are preparing for the chapter four test which will be on Tuesday of next week. Homework is to review the section reviews for 4.1 through 4.6.
Cellular respiration - We learned that the mitochondrion is the organelle that breaks down food to produce energy which is stored in a molecule called adenosine triphosphate or ATP. The ATP powers many of the chemical reactions that enable cells to survive. The process of breaking down food to produce ATP is called cellular respiration. We learned that cellular respiration takes place in the cytoplasm and cell membranes of prokaryotic cells. Plants, animals, and most other organisms use cellular respiration to get energy from food.
This afternoon we continued our exploration of early Egyptian culture and what a typical day in the life of an Egyptian might have looked like. During our review of Egyptian belief in the afterlife, Bobby and I made the decision to construct an Egyptian death mask or better yet, a one-to-one scale mask of Anubis. We will use a combination of sculpting foam and possibly paper mache to complete this ambitious project. Homework is to read pages 101-106 and complete #'s 1-3.
reading comprehension and note taking reinforcement
Lesson Outline
This afternoon we completed our worksheet on the invasive species described as Frankenfish. Bobby used his notes to complete a variety of questions about an article that was written in USA Today on the snakehead carp. Bobby still needs practice on how to determine what information is relevant in a given article, video or presentation. This article complemented our work in life science on the ecosystem. Homework: None.
