This morning we continued to practice our conversion of fractions into common denominators and then determine which fraction is of a greater value. We practiced problems on page 190 #s 5-12 in section 4.3 Homework is to complete the problems on page 191 #'s 3-14
Identifying errors with run-ons, commas, capitalization, sequence, and repetitive word use
Lesson Outline
Bobby did not have his homework again today. We went on to the next lesson in which I gave him an article about the history of Air Jordans. His job was to rewrite the paragraph, correcting all errors of the types identified in the lesson topic.
This morning we focused on the homework that was assigned last night. Bobby did not attempt his homework and admitted that he forgot. We discussed that this was not the first time by any means and that his teachers at the Pine School or at Oxbridge would be far less forgiving than yours truly. He promised to do better. We spent the class period completing the problems on page 191. homework is to complete page 192.
We discussed Bobby's revision on the LeBron James paragraph. Since he did not have his hw, he worked on summarizing the sneakerinc.com animated "article" in class. He was instructed to revise it for homework.
We learned that matter is made up of atoms. There are nearly 100 types of atoms that occur naturally on Earth and they are known as elements. There are only six elements that make up most of the human body. These and other elements are important for cell processes in all living things. We learned about molecules which are groups of atoms that are held together by chemical bonds. We discovered that molecules can be made up of only one type of atom as in oxygen gas which has two oxygen atoms or they can be made up of two types of atoms as in water. Next we learned that substances made up of atoms of two or more elements joined by chemical bonds are called compounds and most of the molecules found in cells are compounds. Organisms need molecules for growth, repair, and other life processes. Nutrients such as lipids, proteins, and carbohydrates are used for energy and building materials. The molecules that contain instructions for cell functions are nucleic acids.
Bobby formed singular and plural possessive nouns. He completed an online practice activity forming singular and plural possessive nouns on Chompchomp.com. He edited a paragraph (Daily Edit) and a spelling quiz. He read two chapters in "Holes," and we discussed.
This morning we reviewed cellular division with particular emphasis on the four stages of cellular mitosis. We worked on Bobby's word bank which will be extremely important as he prepares for the next chapter assessment later in the week or first thing next week. This material is challenging and will require patience and focus.
Over the course of the last two weeks, we have witnessed Bobby's lack of organizational proficiency manifested by forgotten homework, textbooks left at home and the manner in which he "organizes" his loose papers and handouts. I have ordered five one-inch three ring binders for Bobby as well as five tab dividers which we will use to set up individual notebooks for each of his core subjects. I have explained to Bobby that this is imperative for his growth and development and will be required at the Pine School or elsewhere. The notebooks/dividers should arrive by the end of the week.
This afternoon we deviated from our lesson plan to watch a fascinating video on the lost city of Petra in Jordan. This amazing settlement was actually carved out of the sandstone and has been hidden from modern man for the last 1000 years. We examined some of the engineering marvels featured in Petra including the development of running water throughout the center of the city. This design mirrored the efforts of the Incans which constructed aqueducts to accomplish the same thing. Interesting parallels were drawn between two civilizations which had no contact with each other. Homework: none...
