Spanish Preview
Lesson Outline
Kaitlin and I previewed the information that she will learn during her high school study of Spanish.

We spoke about different conjugations that exist in Spanish. We spoke about regular verbs and irregular verbs. We spoke about how groups of verbs will "break" conventions in similar ways and therefore can be advantageous to study at the same time.

We spoke about the value of having systems when trying to learn so much information in such a short period of time.

Adjectives Continued
Lesson Outline
We started with a brief review during which David was able to remember several vocabulary words on his own. We repeated the bulk of the words from yesterday and looked at the exercises that we did taking the time to repeat the phrases that were used to answer in complete Spanish sentences.

We moved on to some new vocabulary and reading. David demonstrated that he was paying attention by converting the sentences that we read into rough English equivalents.

David was given a copy of the vocabulary review sheet from this chapter and shown how much of the information we have already gone over at this point.

Lesson Comments
David was attempting to do his English homework during our session. We struck an accord that we would finish 3 minutes early so that he could work on his homework provided that he worked hard in class.

He did work hard and so we finished early. But, I let him know that this was a one time thing and would not be allowed in the future.

David was late for our session today.

Lesson Outline
David and I discussed the objectives of this chapter. We highlighted how this text does an excellent job of focusing on specific themes and I invited David to look for those themes as we move forward in this chapter and others.

We read a dozen or more thematic sentences in Spanish. Many of them using the verb ser which is a focus of the chapter.

David was able to pair opposite meaning words easily.

He was able to answer basic questions in Spanish with only occasional peeks at his notes/text.

Preview Spanish 1
Lesson Outline
David turned in his homework on time at the start of class! This can be a big step for a new highschooler and I am proud of him.

Another great milestone was achieved today as well. Today was the first day that during our review David displayed enough familiarity with the content that I feel he is ready to take the test. While he still has a little ways to go before complete mastery of the content, he has improved markedly since Monday.

We took a moment to discuss this. We celebrated his progress. I asked him what activities we had done between Monday and today to most help him acquire the information.

I pointed out again that the responsibility to do those types of activities would fall increasingly on him.

We then moved to a Preview of Spanish 1. We spoke about the conjugations that he would learn this year. Our preview included the concept of regular verbs, and we made it as far as regular -ER verbs before we ran out of time.

Test Review with first paragraph - Highschool Responsibilities
Lesson Outline
David and I reviewed starting with much of the same material of yesterday. Today, however, he was able to generate much more of the information on his own. I believe that the review from yesterday that we spent investing in small pneumonic devices has paid off.

We then got into the book provided review. David was able to provide an appropriate response to each of the prompts. Some prompts did take more time for him still.

We then read a paragraph in Spanish about Argentina. David seemed to be in a bit of a rush when reading in Spanish. So, we slowed down together and took the information piece by piece.

With assistance, he was able to answer all of the written questions about the paragraph.

Notes:
We spoke about how in the future we will not have this much time to review in class and how David will need to this on his own time.

Lesson Outline
Kaitlin and I had a brief review and then jumped into working together online.

While sharing her screen, she visited StudySpanish.com and navigated to the Grammar lesson.

We read about days of the week. We discussed the differences in the material presented by the text and by the website. Some differences included how the website presents information on how days of the week are all masculine and how the definite articles el or los can have the same meaning as the English word "on" when used with days of the week.

Kaitlin did a good job reading the online lesson. She then completed as classwork the basic quiz for the lesson. We talked about how it is appropriate for her to use her notes and the written lesson to help her answer the questions correctly.

She answered all but one of the answers correctly with a relatively high level of independence. She then was shown how to correct her answers on her own until receiving a 100%.

Lesson Comments
We experienced some technology issues today.

One of those issues being that Kaitlin was able to hear me but I was not able to hear her. She demonstrated her understanding and attentiveness by circling answers with the mouse pointer on her screen while she was sharing her screen or with body language, nodding, and the like.

12 Verbs, Test Review: Seasons, Days, Numbers
Lesson Outline
David and I reviewed generally the material covered so far and then we focused in to review for his test.

David expressed some concern about his familiarity with the material that we have covered so far. So, we took some extra time to go page by page over the material up to this point. Understandably, he expressed that he is less familiar with the weather (understandable because it is one of the most recent things we have covered).

As we covered the subjects, David was instructed to write notes down on the vocabulary review page that the teacher copied from the book for him.

He did write most of what I specifically instructed him to write. But, did not write any notes at moments where I did not specifically instruct him to do so. I would like to see him write more notes independently as we progress in this high school level course.

David and I started to complete the review given in the textbook but will have to continue that in our next class.

David was manipulating an infinite cube during class. Some students can focus more while their hands are busy so I let him do so.

He seemed to gain and loose and regain focus. I would say he did a fair to good job overall. But, will continue to monitor this.

Test Review - Seasons and Time
Lesson Outline
Kaitlin and I reviewed for her test.

We specifically used the review provided in the text to walk her through the format that they use for each chapter.

We started with some basic questions that focus on vocabulary. Kaitlin then read a paragraph in Spanish about the seasons in Argentina and how they differ from those in the United States.

We took this time to point out how wide a range of latitudes Argentina covers and discuss the significance of its cape.

Kaitlin had some great questions about Argentina during our conversation. We discussed many of her points of interest. I wish we would have had even more time to dive deeper into the topics she brought up.
