Calendar – 100 chart – Days of Week – Months – Identifying numbers 11-20. Gwen addition worksheet using plastic frogs. Printing C - everyone. Stephen – identifying ‘c’ objects. Quinn reading word lists – Anna and Gwendolyn – read Wright Book.
Music /Dance/Drama – Sang ‘If You’re Happy…’, ‘Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes’. Learned ‘The Hokey Pokey’, Dramatic Story ‘Let’s Go on an Bear Hunt’.
Free Play – told them they had to create something while they were playing. Anna and Gwen played school and they created a new 100 chart all over the big white board. Stephen created a block house for his stuffed kitten. Quinn created a bridge out of tape that would save the cars when they ran off it because they would stick and hang until Fireman Stephen rescued them. Discussed how it would be nice to have real bridges that cars would stick to – i.e. Velcro, magnets.
January 13 - Friday
Calendar – 100 chart – Months- Identifying numbers 11-20. Gwen-one digit addition numbers 1-5 – using cubes. Gwen and Stephen,Gwen, Quinn – printing letter C. Quinn reading ‘c’ words. Gwen and Anna –read new ‘Wright Book’ – introduced the new word ‘this’. Stephen –sound of ‘c’. Time for Kids – Martin Luther King and using map skills on ‘Sights of Washington, DC’ map. Stephen and Gwen enjoyed Spanish class. Read ‘Arthur’s Escape’ and comprehension worksheet.
Art: drawing animals with circles.
Thursday – Jan. 12 – calendar, 100 chart – Quinn showed Stephen how to count to 100 on the chart and he was amazing!
Stephen recognizes numbers 1-14 but after working with Quinn, he was able to identify through 20. His homework is to count groups of 1-10 and match to numbers. Anna still confusing some of her teens. Gwendolyn identified numbers through 100. She can write numbers 1-20 but her printing is poor and she says she has never used lined paper – same with printing letters. I am sure she will master it quickly once it is introduced.
Language Arts: Quinn read word cards but had difficulty blending – he didn’t practice over vacation and repetition is
crucial for him. Homework – blending flash cards. Anna and Gwendolyn read through word cards quickly. Started them both on ‘The Wright Group’ books and gave them each one to read for homework. Introduced the sound of ‘c’ to Stephen. He is not completely aware of how to isolate initial sounds.
Read the book “Unicorn’s Golden Horn” and gave them a comprehension sheet – did the unicorn floor puzzle as a group –Quinn didn’t really care to participate. Took a long walk and picked flowers, watched a huge black bee buzz from flower to flower, observed a baby black snake slithering through the leaves, found rocks that they could use as chalk and drew pictures on the sidewalk.
Good day – Gwen was much more outgoing. They played with Quinn’s cars when they first arrived and she was very animated. They both seemed to enjoy Karate. Calendar – 100 chart – Read ‘Rapunzel Spoof’ to them, discussed rhymes within it, created our own rhymes to add to the story. Worked with each child individually – Quinn on numbers and printing Gg and Cc – Anna – printing Dd. Gwen numbers – can count to 100 but couldn’t always identify isolated numbers beyond twenty.
I have a feeling this was not a true assessment and that as I work with her I will find that she actually knows them all. Will spend more time with her tomorrow – really wish we could at least see a report card or find out what programs/books they were using with her at her old school. She knows days of the week.
Stephen has concept of days of week but doesn’t know the order yet - identified numbers 1-14 but got tired and asked if he could lay in the beanbag chair – almost fell asleep but revived for recess – maybe he was tired from Karate.
Recess – today all four younger kids played together and Bobby and JM played basketball.
Listening Center: ‘Giraffe’s Can’t Dance’ – comprehension worksheet – all got 100% but Stephen needed help circling his answers.
Played Alphabet Bingo with Quinn and Gwen while Anna and
Stephen played with leapfrog phonics letter game.
They all played together on iPads and shared with one another.
Morris kids came in without any hesitation – Stephen received a frog from Judie and carried it around with him for most of the day. Calendar – 100 chart – Quinn was able to count to 100 today with only a few mistakes when he rushed. Anna and Quinn reviewed letters we had covered so far – remembered sounds but difficulty remembering how to print them. Assessments: Gwendolyn can spell her name in caps only, doesn’t know how to use lined paper, recognizes all uppercase and most lowercase letters, aware that letters have sounds but doesn’t know more than half of them. Stephen recognizes most of his uppercase letters and some lowercase – doesn’t know any phonics.
Listened to ‘There’s a Monster at the End of this Book’ on iPad.
Played Alphabet Hopscotch. Took JM and Bobby with us to the Dojo – played catch and King of the Mountain.
Counting worksheet – match numbers to group of objects 1-19---Stephen could do 1-9 on his own. Researched ‘Mosquito Fish’ on Google. Built roads with blocks – Stephen was really excited about this project. Quinn and Gwen. Played cars together on the playground and Anna and Stephen set up a coffee shop and made bark coffee and dirt pies for $5 each.
Stephen and Gwen first day. Spent the first 45 minutes getting them settled - Quinn was absolutely precious as he showed them around the room and said, "I hope you will like our school." Transition to Karate went very well. Did calendar and 100 chart, alphabet review, Counting and Sorting. Anna's birthday. Spent the last hour trying to get them to socialize with each other. ,,,playground, iPads, dress-ups. Gwen is shy but I think once she feels safe we will see an entirely different side of her. Stephen was fine - they are both very independent and capable of caring for themselves.
