Endocrine system-hypothalamus and the pituitary
Lesson Outline
Start with a weekly review quiz.
Discuss the role played by the hypothalamus in secreting releasing factors (trophic hormones), which stimulate the pituitary to secrete its stimulating hormones. Use as an example thyroid releasing factor, thyroid stimulating hormone, and then the final release of thyroid hormone from the thyroid gland.
Discuss in detail the hormones released by the posterior pituitary and their functions as anti diuretics.

Lesson Outline
List and discuss the 3 major chemical classes of hormones, amines, proteins, and steroids. Discuss why protein hormones cannot be taken by mouth.
Indicate that hormones are only released when there is a need. The stimuli for release being the change in blood levels of hormones as received by chemoreceptors.
Using insulin as an example, examine the steps in the negative feedback system which will bring about an increase or decrease in the blood hormone level.
