Arianna and I began our lesson with a math game. I showed her three cards with numbers 13, 14, and 15 written on them. Arianna had to flip over various cards with objects on them. She then had to count and match the cards with the correct number, 13, 14, or 15. Then we moved into her lesson. The game really helped her understand the difference between the three numbers.

Today Gracyn and I studied the sight word "than." Gracyn read the word, wrote the word, and used it in a sentence. Next we reviewed words that start with the "wh" blend. She loved doing the word search! In reading, we are working on fluently reading "Welcome Back Butterfly". First we reviewed the challenging words we wrote on post its. Then Gracyn read the story aloud. In science we read about penguins! This is the final Arctic animal of her unit. We went to the computer lab and printed pictures of penguins. Then she wrote facts that she learned about penguins for her Arctic Animal Book.

Arianna and I moved into chapter 12 of her math book. Today we learned the numbers "11" and "12." This was a little difficult for her at first. I printed a fun game to help her identify 11 and 12. The game had several groups of objects on a card. She had to count the objects and then label them as being either 11 or 12. This really helped her. I continued to ask her which is 11 and which is 12. By the end of our time together, she was able to understand the difference between 11 and 12.

Today Gracyn and I realized we are on the 91 day of school! I introduced her to the sight words this week "than, into, what, help, and find." Today we focused on the sight word "into." She traced the word, wrote the word, and used it in a sentence. Gracyn read her weekly poem about snow falling and drew a picture of catching snow on her tongue. In writing she wrote "The penguin is cute." In her writing folder. I introduced Gracyn to the "wh" blend and we identified different words that begin with the "wh" sound. In reading, we are focusing on the level D book, "Welcome back Butterflies." We first did a picture walk through the book. Next we wrote challenging words in the story on post it notes. It was then Gracyn's turn to read the story. I love how well she did the first time reading the story. She used various techniques to sound out words she didn't know! In science we began or unit on penguins. Today we did a KWL chart. I wrote down things she already knew about penguins and what she hopes to learn.
