Today Gwendolyn and I watched the movie "A League of Their Own". This movie depicts the historical time period we researched when learning about the history of women's softball. We paused to discuss ideas relative to what we have learned. We saw that, in an effort to promote women playing professional baseball, they wanted "entertainment value" and sought out players who were deemed "pretty" versus valuing their athletic ability. People were surprised to find that the women could really play well. The attitudes of the time were geared towards war propaganda and keeping the excitement up for men to return to the game after the war. This is 1943. It shows the popularity of trains, radio, and black and white television. We will continue in our next class.
Gwendolyn just finished testing, so we used this time to play Scrabble and give her a break. She was able to fill the board with high scoring words and win the game.
Gwendolyn and I spent the majority of our time walking outside. We walked around 1.5 miles while talking about some of Florida's healthy edible plants. Gwendolyn spent the remainder of her time watching the highlights from the Virginia vs Syracuse women's lacrosse game.
Today Gwendolyn completed the language arts section of her Stanford 10 test. After the test Gwendolyn watched the first 12 minutes of the League of Their Own.
