Today Gwendolyn baked a batch of Oreo stuffed chocolate chip cookies. She combined the flour; baking soda and salt in small bowl and set it aside. She then put the softened butter, granulated sugar, brown sugar and vanilla extract into the Kitchen Aid mixer until it was creamy. Next, Gwendolyn added the eggs one at a time, beating them well after each addition. Gradually she added in the flour mixture and mixed it until it was combined. Finally she stirred in chocolate chips. She then took a large scoop of cookie dough and formed it around the Oreo cookie. Once the Oreo was completely enclosed Gwendolyn placed it on the cookie sheet. We baked them for 13 minutes. They turned out decadent!
We learned about some parts of the circulatory system such as the heart, vessels, and blood. We learned about the digestive system. We explored the functions of the esophagus, stomach, small intestine, and large intestine. We learned that the function of the liver is to make a juice called bile that helps break down large blobs of fat into tiny droplets so that the fats can be broken down more easily. Then we learned that the pancreas makes juices that are released into the small intestine. These juices break down fats and proteins into small pieces that can be absorbed. Next we learned the gallbladder stores bile from the liver and sends it to the small intestine only when food passes through.Waste Removal - We learned that the excretory system rids the body of waste and keeps the water and salt levels in balance. Then we learned when protein is broken down ammonia is made which the liver converts to urea. Next we learned that like a fire our body uses oxygen and produces carbon dioxide which is released by our lungs. Finally we learned the sequence of the urinary system: kidneys remove waste from blood, ureters take urine to the bladder for storage, and the urethra which takes the urine outside the body.
Assignment
We added notes on the digestive and urinary systems to our science notebook.
16-4 Finding Percent of a Whole Number
We learned that finding a percent of a whole is like finding a fractional part of a whole. Next we learned that you can find the percent of a number by changing the percent to a decimal and multiplying or using a proportion.
Gwendolyn did enrichment review about "musical notation." She is learning the importance of the staff, lines, spaces, treble clef and bass clef. She is also learning to be able to recognize these elements in music. She practiced her two songs, "Marriage of Figaro", and "Clarinet Concerto", by Mozart.
