Devin and Ashley had not read the assignment for today (The Open Window). I allowed them to spend 10 minutes reading while I helped Sadie do a final edit of her creative writing piece for the art show. After that we studied vocabulary and prepared for MOnday's vocab test on unit 2.

Lesson Comments
In Devin's defense, there is a slight chance that something happened to his photocopy of the story before he left class (as in I might have accidentally taken it). He had no recollection of the assignment and wasn't reminded of it b/c he didn't have the photocopies with the work that he did bring home (he WAS particularly well prepared for vocabulary).

Paralyzer by Finger 11 - playing through the intro; accenting upbeats on the hi-hat.
Lesson Outline
Played through the intro to Paralyzer and started working on the groove for the first verse. Because this incorporates accented upbeat 8th notes on the hi-hat, we did some accenting exercises to develop a feel for stick height and widening the dynamic range between softer and accented notes. We also did some accenting exercises with 16th note groups in anticipation of playing the accented fill leading into the first chorus.
Assignment
Practice the intro to Paralyzer and the accenting exercises. Work on playing the accented hi-hat within the groove for the first verse.

Lesson Comments
Devin did a great job on the intro portion of Paralyzer. The upbeat accents on the hi-hat once we get into the first verse are challenging him quite a bit. The actual figures he is playing are quite easy, but trying to add the dynamics adds a whole new level of difficulty and coordination challenges.

Lesson Comments
Good lesson. Students seemed fairly aware of events in the Middle East and very concerned about the difficulty in Japan.
All students seemed fairly comfortable with their understandings about WWI. Ashley is particularly strong.
Ashley read the article from pg. 198 in the text ""Te aburre la rutina diaria?" Had Ashley answer the comprehension questions after she read the article. Then we created a couple of questions to poll our students and teachers and write in spanish to submit to Fish Tales. The students came up with 2 questions: Cuales dibujos animados veias cuando eras nino(a)? (Which cartoons did you watch as a child?) and Cuales actividades haces despues de la escuela? (What activities do you do after school?) Students went around the school asking students and teachers and recorded responses.

Look for pictures representing childhood activities

Devin arrived at 10:20 from a dentist appointment. Students enjoyed polling others and they asked both questions in spanish.
Watched a DVD called All About Dung. It tied nicely into the topic of nutrient cycling that we have just begun to investigate. Students were exposed to the anthropological, historical, spiritual, and scientific aspects of dung.
