This was basically a 60 minute crash course on how to take the SAT. We went over some test taking techniques for vocabulary and reading comprehension, I covered the major grammar rules she needs to look out for, and then did a real quick how-to session for the essay. I would have liked to have had more time to work with her, but Raquel's been sick this week and this was the best we could do.

Raquel has worked very hard on this paper and I think she's done a great job. I heard what her Principal said and must say, I'm very shocked. Our process is that Raquel writes the paper, and then I go back and help her edit and clean it up. I also helped her organize her research and write an outline, but I'm confident that is well within the acceptable boundaries of a tutor. Her writing is a lot like Raquel, energetic and all over the place. I've been working to get her to be more focused and concise and frankly, she's come a long way since we started working together.

Raquel did not get much writing done over the weekend so we did not get to prepping for the SAT. Her writing in solid, but she lacks focus and has a hard time keeping her sentences and paragraphs simple. We should be done with the project on Wednesday.

Raquel had an application to write for the Jump Start program, so we started by working on that. Then we were able to get into the research and outline she'd created for her paper. Once we started writing Raquel's issues became very clear. She has a very hard time focusing on one idea at a time and often tries to cram too much information into a sentence or paragraph. We focused on slowing down and building her ideas step by step. She definitely improved as the class went on, I'm interested to read what she writes over the weekend.

Raquel was very anxious and fired up this morning, so it was a little difficult to get her settled down and focused on the assignment. Her OCD and need for perfection get in her way in the sense that she's trying to do the whole project at once. I worked with her to break the project down into sections that she can tackle one at a time. I think this is Raquel's biggest issue. She needs to slow down and organize her thoughts before she jumps into the work.
