comprehension, imagery, art project
Lesson Outline
Maya closed her eyes and listened to the story of The Ugly Duckling, retold. She used word picture imagery to imagine what was happening. We stopped and discussed the plot, and Maya was right on. She didn't want it to end, and displayed such a compassionate heart as the plot unfolded. We watched a non-fiction clip of swan eggs hatching, and Maya was so enthusiastic about what was occurring. She was making connections to the story we read, and was so pleased to get to see them in real life. She was confused as to why the eggs hatching were all swans and there weren't any ducks like in the fairy tale. We stopped and discussed the difference of a fantasy fiction story and non fiction. As an extension, Maya painted her swan neck gourd to resemble the swan we saw on the footage.

Math/FF/VV
Lesson Outline
Today Maya did great on her 9x table drill. She almost beat 2 minutes! In lesson 2-7 and 2-8 Maya learned to add 3 digit numbers. We were able to combine 2 lessons, since this was an easy concept for her. Maya counted base-10 blocks to reinforce the concept of regrouping. In FF, she did very well and made a new high score in Cosmic Reader. Go, Maya, go! I was hoping to have some time today for V/V, but Maya had an early leave for a doctor's appointment.

Field Trip: Pumpkin Patch
Lesson Outline
Maya had a fabulous time at the pumpkin patch! She enjoyed the tour while learning about the characteristics and uses of the pumpkins and gourds present, participated in an art center, and read fiction/non fiction pumpkin books while enjoying lunch in the shade with her peers. All of the students were excited to flip through the thematic books and make connections. It was rewarding to see Maya pick one up, take a break from eating, and truly enjoy reading for pleasure.

Lesson Outline
Maya re-read her paragraph she wrote about the pumpkin patch and practiced typing it onto a Microsoft Word document with her fingers starting on the home row keys. She highlighted the text that contained nouns. As we re-read her paragraph, we brainstormed adjectives to appropriately describe the noun in context. (ripe pumpkins, caring workers, etc.)
