Maya did a practice drill on her 9X tables and completed lesson 2-6, Adding 2 Digit Numbers. She rounded the addends first and then added the new two digit numbers to get an estimate. Then she added the original 2 digit numbers to get an exact answer. Maya learned that we estimate in order to tell if our exact answer is "reasonable". Maya did some practice problems to demonstrate her new knowledge. She was accurate when regrouping the tens and hundreds. She did a great job! Maya played two brain games in FF and then we left for our field trip. She was very excited to go on the field trip and found some really cool pumpkins to take home. I could tell she had a great time and enjoyed being with her peers. Maya did not complete her protocol in FF, nor did she have VV due to our class trip.
Discuss:
Where is the air?
What is air temperature and pressure?
What happens when two different air masses meet?
What instruments do you use to describe weather?
What does a weather map show?
Today Maya practiced her 9x tables and took a practice drill. At this point she can skip count by verbalizing the multiples of 9. Maya practiced rounding numbers and added a new skill- estimating sums. She understood this skill, as we looked at base 10 blocks to demonstrate how it works. Maya knows we estimate to check to see if a calculation is reasonable or if an exact answer is not needed. Maya continued in her FF program. As per our conversation this afternoon, I will not be writing many updates pertaining to her FF program since I will be sending out a weekly update each Saturday. These reports will involve extended details. They will be sent out from the SciLearn website. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Lesson Comments
Maya remembers the materials from last year and it helps her to understand better the new material.
Today in Math, Maya practiced rounding numbers to the nearest 10 and nearest 100. She completed a daily spiral review, which is a cumulative sample of what she has already learned. Maya practiced her 9X tables and performed a drill which demonstrated improvement. In FF, she continued her program. In V/V she did an excellent job, maybe her best yet! Her description was thorough for both the picture to picture step and the word imaging step.
Babar's Yoga Book for Elephants; warrior poses, fish game
Lesson Outline
We read through the Babar's Yoga for Elephants book while we practiced some of the poses. We also used the advanced yoga book to refer to for variations. Maya worked hard today with new variations and difficult configurations of poses. We ended class with relaxation to music and lavender lotioin.
Maya and I reviewed what she had read previously about Columbus and his team of explorers. We discussed what it must have been like for these men to be at sea for over 10 weeks. Following the review and discussion, Maya wrote a diary entree as one of the explorers. She did very well putting herself in the role and tried to imagine what it must have been like to sleep on a boat for that long. We used Maya's adjective word wall to find words that supported how the explorers could have felt.
Subject/Predicate, main and supporting characters, reading fluency and comprehension
Lesson Outline
Maya began her session reviewing subjects and predicates; to further the review, she watched a YouTube clip of a Schoolhouse Rock song about subjects and predicates. Maya then worked in her grammar book on matching the correct predicates to subjects. She did very well with this activity. Maya and I continued reading the next chapter in her Cam Jansen book. We discussed the main character and supporting characters and the difference between the two. Maya worked on completing sketches of Cam and several supporting characters. We moved on to Raz Kids and Maya read a level H book of choice and completed the comprehension quiz. She read with great fluency and scored a 5/5 on the comprehension quiz. We played a Fact and Opinion reading game for the last 10 minutes of our session.
