Today Maya practiced her 9x tables and took an untimed drill, since she's just beginning. Then she reviewed yesterday's skills learned, for additional practice. We went over her hw, also. Then Maya learned how to compute addition problems using mental math in Lesson 2-2. This is still a little difficult for Maya. We will continue to practice. She is learning to break apart numbers, to make them easy to add in her mind. This is just another stategy for solving addition problems. I've explained that she can draw a picture, set up the problem horizontally, use the number chart or use mental math. In FF, Maya played the brain game Paint Match, where she used auditory and memory recall skills, combined with decoding skills.
Today Maya began a new set of flashcards to help her learn the 9X tables. She has learned a different strategies to help her solve these facts until they become rote. She had additional practice with the 9X tables through playing a hand held computer game. Maya should continue to study these facts at school and at home. Additionally, Maya should continue to study her other 0,1,2,3 and 5, and 10X facts, as not to forget them. Maya had a double dose of mathematics, since the internet was down during her Fast ForWord time. We practiced making change using the bar diagram strategy. In Lesson 2-2, Maya learned how to use a 100 chart to add two-digit numbers and develop mental math strategies. This method will build Maya's previous place-value knowledge. Helping Maya think about numbers in different ways is important for later mental math lessons in which she will beak apart numbers to add and subtract. In Maya's V/V program she did a picture to picture activity and a word imaging picture. She is doing a great job and using more descriptive words to verbalize what she sees. The goal is to master these steps and then overlap into the sentence by sentence step of V/V. She described a picture of two puppies playing with a ball and a picture of a whale, which she did not have right in front of her.

Lesson Comments
Maya loves books and if it is something extra to learn, she is ready to learn and dig out from the book or internet.
Today Maya and I checked over last night's HW and the test review packet. Then she scored a 100 on her 3X Quiz. Great work! She should still continue to study these facts, in order to retain the information. Maya took the rest of the class to complete her Topic 1 test and double check all of her answers. She scored a 93%. We were both proud! In Fast ForWord she continued her program. I will be emailing a weekly progress report every Friday, which will contain the areas she has worked on. This report will come from the SciLearn website and will provide more data, as to Maya's program and progress. Please do not think it is trash in your email account. Have a great weekend!
