Firefly, "I am a Lion" yoga book; aerial yoga; shiva twist balancing; relaxation with Maya's poem; handout firefly
Lesson Outline
We looked at a few aerial arts videos and discussed aerial yoga. Our yoga practice in the studio included new poses firefly (advanced) and shiva twist (balancing). We read through part of "I am a Lion" yoga book and Maya guessed the poses. We did cat/cow for back stretching. Maya also practiced handstands today. We ended class with relaxation to music and lavender lotion, while reading Maya's poem, entitled "Calm." The poem written in her language arts class was about yoga, calming and relaxation.
Maya wrote a poem about an emotion. She chose "calm," and recalled and listed synonyms on her easel. She also generated yoga-specific nouns and verbs that create that emotion in her. She completley grasped this concept and generated wonderful ideas. She transferred the brainstorming information in a preferred order. We typed and published it, and Maya selected a font style and color to reflect the emotion. Please have her practice memorizing this poem at home, and portraying the emotion through her voice. She'll have an opportunity to recite it on Wednesday. She took her vocabulary test on splendid, ache, passion, admire, concentrate and bother. She earned 6/6.
Today Maya completed 2 modules, one in Cosmic Reader and the other in Polar Planet. I am going to check to be sure I have a family member's email so that I can begin to send out weekly (Fridays) updates on Maya's weekly progress in FF. Maya completed a 40 problem fact drill on her 3x tables. Again, her time has improved. I can see the song has helped. I can tell when she is trying to recall a fact she sings that part of the song. Maya took her Topic 1 Test on Numeration today. She ran out of time and appeared very tired at the end of the day. I had to change her schedule today, due to parent conferences. Therefore she will have an opportunity to be fresh- eyed and double check her work tomorrow. In VV she engaged in a word imaging activity where she described a picture of a pig. The goal in this step is to reach a place where she will not have to look back at the picture. She is doing very well.
Maya looked at photographs of her expressing 8 major emotions, and determined which each one was. She filled in her origami fortune teller with 8 major emotions and a group of synonyms for each on the next fold. This will help her with memorizing vocabulary to use in place of the basic term, as well as make connections to her life as she reads. She chose the emotion "calm" to generate ideas for a poem. We brainstormed activities, synonyms and things that remind us of that emotion.
Today Maya completed a 3x table math drill. She watched the "3 is a Magic Number" video as another reinforcement. Maya reviewed Topic 1 content for tomorrow's test. She is ready. The only skill which continues to be tricky for her is making change. This skill will be practiced during future lessons. She continued her FF program and LB. In LB Maya gave a full description during our picture to picture activity of a shark and scuba diver. She was very explicit and used helpful adjectives. Great work!
